After earning her bachelor's degree in dental science, Ritu enlisted in the Indian Army. She was a captain when she departed the military in 1992, having completed two Short Service Commissions in the Army. She has an inspirational narrative to share as a dental surgeon, mountaineer, skydiver, and paratrooper.

Stood Unshaken from Life-threatening Circumstances

Her life took an unexpected turn when she received a breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 40. Many people tend to break down in their mental strength after two operations, six rounds of chemotherapy, and five years of antibiotics, but she was one of the very few who stood strong. She had a mission in life, and she was determined to pursue it.

Ritu lost her hair due to chemotherapy in August 2000. At the time, a dental patient who believed that cancer was contagious left the clinic after learning about Ritu's breast cancer treatment. She was inspired by this encounter to start her journey to raise awareness of breast cancer throughout India.

She Began to Change People’s Lives

In a six-month tour that touched the lives of over 70,000 people in India, she arranged 140 seminars that were attended by 26,000 people. She traveled 30,220 kilometers in 177 days, passing through 26 states. In 2006, she started a novel project to connect adventure sports and cancer: Project Highway.

Enlisted in the Army Early On

During her college years, Dr. Ritu had the opportunity to experience the Army through the National Cadet Corps (NCC), which stoked her desire to enlist in the Indian Armed Forces. The draw of military service drew her in despite her education as a dental surgeon and her passion for badminton at university. After passing the challenging selection process, Ritu started her Army career with rigorous training at the AMC Training Centre in Lucknow. She developed her weaponry and combat skills during the first induction, which also instilled discipline and a fighting spirit. She then underwent specialized dental training tailored to military specifications, readying her for deployment in a range of settings.

The Moment Tragedy Struck

Ritu received the devastating news of her cancer in September 2000, soon after opening her own private dentistry office in Pune. This news completely upended her life and threatened to destroy her. Ritu handled the intricacies of cancer treatment with courage and composure, speaking candidly and openly with everyone—including her daughter, who is eight years old. Her family had an atmosphere of acceptance as a result, which lessened the burden of hiding and promoted empathy in the face of adversity. Ritu, who embodied strength in the face of adversity, courageously underwent chemotherapy and surgery and came out of the cancer trial with honor.

Breaking the Stigma Around Cancer

She wholeheartedly attempted to dispel the stigma, misinformation, and misunderstandings surrounding cancer. Five and a half years after the cancer diagnosis, in 2006, the mother-daughter team combined science, adventure sports, and a cause to benefit communities in general. They established an unmatched pace for nationwide awareness and motivational efforts about breast, cervical, and oral cancer.

Ritu transforms lives and empowers others with her groundbreaking, cross-border initiative, "Before, Through, and Beyond," Cancer. Through her knowledge, resources, and expertise across the cancer continuum—from prevention and treatment to end-of-life care and beyond—she seeks to bridge the gap between the general public (healthy people) and individuals impacted by the disease. Over 2,09,000 kilometers have been covered by her NGO's 2700+ cancer awareness workshops in 359 isolated, rural, and urban locations throughout 23 States and 4 Union Territories since its founding. Over 5,500 patients and their caregivers have been guided through their cancer journeys worldwide, and over 3,25,000 people have gained cancer literacy. Additionally, the organization has given more than 750 underprivileged patients financial and resource assistance.

By overcoming her adversity to guide others, Ritu exemplified the human spirit's persistent tenacity. Her journey, which combined service and survival, is the ideal illustration of the transformational potential of bravery and compassion. In her relentless battle against cancer, she genuinely embodies the spirit of service, bringing hope to even the most hopeless corners of people facing overwhelming odds.
