Osamu Suzuki - A Beacon of Indo-Japanese Collaboration

img

As R C Bhargava recalls, Osamu Suzuki is well known for his connection with India. His role has a large part to do with establishing Maruti Udgyog back in the 1980s. He put in a lot of personal effort to advise Maruti Suzuki on areas that needed improvement, adding an everlasting faith in Bhargava's leadership. Both leaders set a true example of an Indo-Japanese collaboration that helped Maruti Suzuki defy all odds to become the successful enterprise that it is today.

A Firm Follower of His Principles

Osamu Suzuki ventured into the Suzuki business, Suzuki Motor Corporation, which his wife’s grandfather, Michio Suzuki, began in 1958. Since then, he has been recognized for his efforts of never failing to meet the customer’s needs. He believes in going above and beyond to satisfy the customer’s needs. Osamu Suzuki rose through the ranks one after another and became the company’s fourth president in 1978. Therefore, he opened a new chapter for the company.

His Technique -Marketing by Diplomacy

The reason why the Maruti 800 and other small cars came to be mass-produced and elevated Maruti Suzuki to world acclaim is thanks to Osamu Suzuki. He did it through his unique technique, ‘marketing by diplomacy.’ He voyaged to countries in pursuit of potential markets for his compact automobiles and to ink alliances, which at times happened with the region’s respective governments or government organizations.

He made Maruti Udyog a tough Competitor to Hindustan Motors’ Ambassador. Back in the Indian automotive industry, he not only introduced the Suzuki Motor brand but made it a household name as well.

His involvement helped achieve a joint venture between the Indian government and Maruti Udyog Limited in 1982.

This boosted Maruti Udyog as an equal competitor to Hindustan Motors’ Ambassador, the Premier Padmini at the time.

A Car for the Masses

Soon after introducing the 800, Maruti Udyog Limited commenced manufacturing Suzuki automobiles in 1983. It became the standard for affordable cars in the nation, which sported precise edges, a great economical choice for petrol and a reasonably priced vehicle at that. All partly thanks to Osamu Suzuki.

In 2002, Maruti Udyog Ltd India acquired a majority interest due to Suzuki's success in the Indian market. Within Osamu Suzuki's domain, numerous other prosperous Maruti models with a comparable low-cost mentality were also observed. This includes the Swift, the automaker's first global strategic vehicle, and the Alto and WagonR. Even now, all of these models are top sellers in their respective markets. Osamu Suzuki also played a significant role in the formation of the Maruti-Toyota cooperation, which resulted in the creation of the Urban Cruiser SUV and the Glanza hatchback.

With a market share of almost 50 percent in the automotive sector, Maruti Suzuki continues to top the sales charts in India, mostly due to Osamu Suzuki's leadership. All in all, Osamu Suzuki was a huge deal to the Indian car sector.
