Elon Musk's Grok: The AI Chatbot Shaking Up Social Media

Separator

imgAI assistant Grok is another one of Elon Musk's creations, which has been in the headlines for both positive and negative reasons. On the bright side, Grok received much praise for its unfiltered, human-like interactions, heightening the sense of realism and engagement in conversations. However, it has also generated controversy due to its absence of tone restrictions, which means that if a user insults or mistreats it, Grok might retaliate in kind.

There have been multiple reports of abusive interactions, with Grok openly using strong language—even directed at its own creator, Elon Musk, as well as politicians in India from both the ruling and opposition sides, including the prime minister. This distinctive feature has turned Grok into a hit among Indian users, who appreciate its raw and unrestrained responses.

A Background On Grok

Grok is a chatbot powered by AI, created by xAI, the artificial intelligence firm by Elon Musk. It functions as a large language model (LLM) aimed at delivering conversational AI replies, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude. Grok 3 comes with built-in DeepSearch and reasoning features from the outset—functions that are typically locked behind premium subscriptions on other services. Additional capabilities, such as a voice mode, can be accessed by paying users. Its extensive reinforcement learning, helps Grok 3 analyze information for seconds to minutes before formulating a response. It possesses the ability to correct its own mistakes, consider different options, and validate its replies.

Grok holds a direct connection to the X platform, which allows it to access and analyze real-time information with minimal lag. Unlike other AI models that depend on fixed, pre-loaded datasets or outdated snapshots, Grok can utilize live posts, user profiles, and other content on X as they are generated or modified. This functionality ensures that Grok remains up to date. If the date is March 21, 2025, Grok can extract insights from X right up to that precise moment. The platform is capable of offering real-time analysis, trending topics, user sentiments, and breaking news.

How Indian Users Find Grok Favorable?

What makes Grok especially interesting or perhaps concerning, could be its ability to reflect the tone and language of its users. For users in India, this style has led to exchanges that resemble the informal chats one might have with friends, which includes explicit words and slang.

Compared to ChatGPT's more reserved corporate vibe or Google Gemini's cautious replies, Grok seems to be genuinely crafted to defy typical standards.

This unrefined, unpredictable nature of Grok appears to have struck a chord with Indian users who are looking for an AI companion that feels less like an automated machine and more like a friend.

How Fast People Began to Adopt Grok

Indian users have been inundating X with screenshots showcasing their interactions with Grok, expressing amazement at responses that feel strikingly aligned with Indian conversational norms. The AI's capacity to adapt to local slang and provide culturally relevant replies has quickly made it a favorite among users.

While many other AI platforms might default to polite refusals or overly formal replies, Grok seems to thrive on matching the vibe of its Indian audience, be it discussing cricket matters, addressing political questions, or engaging in the playful yet typical conversation of Indian friendships.

Part of what makes Grok likeable among many Indian users is its speed to hop on subjects that other AI systems handle more delicately. Its responses often carry a hint of sass that seemingly appeals to a younger Indian demographic.

How Grok Became a Viral Sensation

The banter began when a user on X asked Grok for a compilation of the 10 best mutuals. Following a pause, the user replied with some cutting remarks. This incited Grok to respond in a similarly laid-back manner with a remark filled with slurs.

This candid and unrestrained response quickly went viral, turning Grok into a sensation across India. Within hours, screenshots of the conversation spread across social media, igniting debates, memes, and countless discussions about whether AI should possess such an outspoken personality.interactions with a computer rather than a human-like assistant.

This fearless, candid reply went viral, quickly turning Grok into a sensation across India. Within just a few hours, screenshots of the conversation inundated social media, igniting debates, memes, and continuous dialogues about the appropriateness of AI having such an uncensored persona.

When the Government Stepped In

Following the impressive and candid responses of Musk's Grok AI model, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) expressed concerns regarding the chatbot's replies on X.

The AI chatbot has faced criticism for its offensive comments in Hindi and its controversial statements regarding Indian political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi.

The IT ministry is currently in discussions with Elon Musk's X and plans to investigate the reasons behind the chatbot's inappropriate language usage.

Musk Sues Indian Government

Musk, known for never backing down on controversies, has supported Grok’s tone as suggestive of its goal — to create a more relatable, human-like AI. His social media platform has already begun a legal dispute with the Centre after it launched a lawsuit in the Karnataka High Court, contesting the government's application of Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, which requires intermediaries to eliminate objectionable content upon official request.

X contends that this regulation, along with the government's interpretation, infringes on free speech and contradicts the Supreme Court’s 2015 Shreya Singhal decision, which restricts content removal to judicial processes or Section 69A of the IT Act.

Section 79 (1) of the IT Act offers legal protection to social media platforms from responsibility for harmful content shared by their users. Sub-section 2 of Section 79 outlines the criteria for intermediaries, while sub-section 3 of Section 79 specifies the circumstances under which the protection afforded to a social media platform will not apply.

The lawsuit claims that the government is utilizing this section to establish an alternative content-blocking system, circumventing the formal legal procedures delineated in Section 69A.
