Today, Jharkhand is in spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The government agencies have unearthed several scams in the state. However, some good news is coming from the Agriculture industry. Following a successful seven-year pilot of a mustard cultivation project across seven districts in Jharkhand, the Central Government is set to expand the initiative statewide. According to reports, the strategic plan aims to enhance the cultivation area from the existing four lakh hectares and improve the yield from the current average of eight quintals per hectare. The expansion plan is set help to
attain self-sufficiency in edible oil production. It is anticipated that this initiative will be incorporated into a broader scheme scheduled for announcement within the first 100 days of the incoming Central Government's term, according to reports.

The strategic plan involves transforming approximately 30- 40 percent of Jharkhand's unutilized rice fallows during the Rabi season into productive mustard fields. This initiative has the potential to significantly increase the area under mustard cultivation within the state. Moreover, there is an objective to boost the yield to match or even exceed that of the top mustard-producing states. The Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research (DRMR) in Bharatpur is instrumental in supporting this endeavor, ensuring the effective execution of the project. Although the current average yield is below the targeted benchmarks, regions such as the Saraikela Kharsawan district manifest promising prospects for substantial yield enhancements.
