The number of Indian students studying abroad has increased steadily over the years despite several significant adversities, including racism and violence, civil wars, political unrest and international conflicts. According to the government, in the current year,1,33,5878 Indian students are studying abroad. This includes 4,27000 students studying in Canada, 3,37,630 students in the US, 8580 in China, eight in Greece, 900 in Israel, 14 in Pakistan, and 2510 in Ukraine. Remember, it’s been merely two years since 20,000 Indians, including 18,000 medical students, were rescued from Ukraine under the Indian government's Operation Ganga between February 26, 2022, and March 11, 2022 - during the peak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The numbers indicate a significant increase from the pre pandemic years, when 675,541 students were studying abroad in 2019. It is also interesting to note that the Government of India acknowledges that the global landscape now functions as an inter connected workplace. In response, it has embarked on transformative initiatives to enhance its engagement with the Indian diaspora. Recognizing the diaspora as a valuable asset, the government aims to leverage its success, prosperity, and influence to contribute to India's growth and development. However, the government also has a significant responsibility to ensure the safety of Indian students abroad. Currently, the grievances are responded to by Indian missions in various countries through channels like calls, walk-ins, e-mails, social media, 24x7 Helplines, Open Houses, and the MADAD portal. It’s of utmost importance that the students make use of these channels to ensure their own safety. As we continue to advocate for safety, it’s time to publish another yearly special featuring some of the stellar Indian alumni from institutions abroad. Do let us know your thoughts.
