General Counsel

Bhavna Singh's ambition to become a technology lawyer began to take shape during her legal education at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. She got opportunities early in her career to work in reputed corporate houses such as PriceWater house Coopers and Wipro. At the latter, she was entrusted with overseeing the legal and contracting support for three verticals, despite her relatively young age. One of her early achievements was creating the first regulatory compliance model for the telemarketing industry. Later she joined Sun Microsystems as a Lead Attorney, lending her expertise to negotiating international, multi million dollar technology licensing agreements, at a time when Sun Microsystems was considered the global leader in proprietary software. She left to take her IT career further and joined Fortune Global 500 company Accenture. As Senior Legal Counsel she was Accenture’s’ s global legal lead for agile contracting and provided leadership on a capacity management offering spread across three jurisdictions. Over her decade long tenure with the company, she gained vast experience in handling complex, multi jurisdictional contracts while working in areas of compliance and contract management to provide legal leadership to several of Accenture’s businesses in Europe and the US. In 2019 Bhavna was offered the position of Global General Counsel at Subex, a leading Indian IT company trusted by over 75% of the world’s top 50 telcos. She leads a legal team that provides support and regulatory compliance to the company in India as well as other jurisdictions as Subex has clients in over 70 countries.

Here is Bhavna Singh’s exclusive interview with CEO Insights magazine.

Tell us why have you chosen the law to build your career and what has kept you motivated to continue being in this domain for so long?
I was fortunate to have met a few eminent lawyers in my childhood who instilled in me a deep appreciation for the legal profession. Hence, ever since my school days, I have been passionate to pursue a career related to jurisprudence.

The main objective of my work as a General Counsel for Subex is to continuously evaluate and re-evaluatesolutions and ideas with the aim of improving the organization's efficiency

What challenges have you faced in work life so far and how have you overcome those?
When I joined this industry, there was a great paucity of women in my area of specialisation. Initially, I was the only woman in my sphere of work. My mentor at the time made me realise that, no matter what, I should always keep my focus on achieving the top spot in my profession, never making or allowing concessions for my gender. That lesson served me well and over time I learned how to remain assertive and take control of situations, acting as a trusted advisor to the business. As a result, I do not wait for things to happen but take charge when I feel it is the right thing to do. More over, a collaborative mindset is also important. I believe if one can understand the business, collaborate in operations and be trusted to be openany criticalities can be handled with ease.

How do you stay updated with the ongoing trends and how do you work on that?
I improve my understanding of trends and their usages by staying connected with others in the industry. In addition, I manage a global team of lawyers and constantly remind them of the need to stay abreast of new laws and encourage them to bring fresh ideas into the workspace. I also spend a great deal of my time in reading and analysis to gain a more incisive and nuanced command of various facets of law. What I believe is most essential in any workspace, however, is hard work. It is the single most crucial ingredient in helping to effect the absolute best outcome for any assignment.

What suggestions or advice would you give to the budding entrepreneurs who are willing to join the diagnostic industry?
This is an exciting domain! Remember, hard work and curiosity are indispensable to success. Most importantly, understand the business first and then deliver solutions by implementing the right strategies.
