Could you please provide a summary of your professional journey and what drives your daily work?
My professional path has been both diverse and rewarding over the past 15 years. I obtained my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Organic Chemistry from the University of Mumbai, followed by a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Institute of Chemical Technology (formerly UDCT), Mumbai. I also pursued postdoctoral research at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and I'm currently working towards an MBA in Business Management at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai.
My journey began as a Senior Chemist in R&D at Sunshield Chemicals Limited, which is part of the Solvay Group. During this time, I refined my skills in synthetic organic chemistry and developed a deep interest in technology and surface science. Over the years, I progressed in my career, moving from a junior role to becoming the Head of R&D. I gained recognition for my contributions in creating new products, sustainable solutions, and pioneering new technologies. Today,
I hold the position of Head of R&D at Sunshield Chemical Limited, where I lead a dynamic team of R&D professionals and engineers. I oversee the development of cutting-edge products, drive business expansion and foster collaborations with external partners.
During my Ph.D. research, I authored 10 original research papers, secured a patent, and received prestigious scholarships such as the Erasmus Mundus European scholarship and DAAD scholarship. Looking ahead, my aspirations revolve around continuously pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation. My focus remains on crafting sustainable solutions that have a positive impact on both society and the environment. I draw motivation from the constant challenges I encounter and the opportunity to provide solutions that promote sustainability and benefit society.
As the Head of R&D, how do you foster a culture of innovation in your team and ensure the company stays informed of innovatory trends?
As the Head of Research and Development (R&D), my foremost mission is to instill a culture of innovation within my team. Setting clear and inspiring visions, we establish SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals for our innovation endeavors. Empowering and entrusting our team fosters ownership and a willingness to explore new concepts, even if it means learning from failures. Adequate resource allocation, including time and budget, support innovation and development. We prioritize continuous learning to keep pace with industry trends, subscribing to various news sources for the latest chemical updates. Cross functional collaboration is encouraged to ensure a comprehensive perspective on innovation and market insights. A customer-centric approach underscores the importance of understanding customer needs and unmet requirements. Recognition, rewards, and feedback mechanisms motivate and assess our innovation initiatives. We stress the importance of a long-term perspective, looking beyond short-term gains to secure our position as a market leader. As a leader, what are the guidelines or methodologies you follow?
As a leader, I adhere to a set of core principles that guide my approach. I believe in leading by example, setting a positive work ethic standard for my team, while also prioritizing clear, transparent, and honest communication. Empowerment is crucial, allowing team members to take ownership of their tasks, and active listening, where I show empathy and value their input, is integral. I establish a clear vision and strategic plan, adapt to market trends, foster teamwork, and invest in mentorship and coaching for the professional growth of my team. Problem-solving, recognition, continuous learning, data-driven decision-making, feedback-driven improvements, inspiration, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are all part of my leadership style, driven by empathy and consideration for my team members' needs and well-being.

In general, the outlook for the specialty chemicals industry appears promising, marked by substantial investments, mergers and acquisitions, and robust growth in export revenue. The government has introduced various initiatives such as Production Linked Incentives (PLI) and Make-In-India to achieve this target. Consequently, our focus centers on intensifying investments in research and development, collaborating with university partners, and exploring innovative and environmentally friendly technologies to add to our portfolio.
