What is your role in developing indigenous technological solutions in the domain of drone technology?
I'm currently working as the faculty advisor for my students to assist them in understanding the various nuances of drone technology. We have joined hands with Lockheed Martin Corporation, which is an American firm dealing with aerospace, arms, defence, information security, and Technology Corporation along with worldwide interests. Lockheed Martin provided us with particular specifications and asked us to frame it as a working model. Rather than handing them over with the working model, we went ahead to demonstrate the model also. After that, my students developed the second version of this particular UAV, and we presented it before Lockheed Martin. That particular UAV was unfolded by then chairman of DRDO and was also a demonstration for ISRO in front of numerous industry stalwarts.
Share your views on the thriving
Drones industry and how is UAS-DTU intending to contribute to it?
Medical drones are now getting extremely popular, and COVID has certainly compelled the use of drones significantly. Starting from sending materials or medicines, drones also assisted in searching and rescue missions, where normal human beings cannot go. Some of the other use of drones include agricultural disaster management and construction site investigations. As our country is prone to cyclones, floods, and heavy rains, the use of drones can be proved advantageous for the supply of foods and medicines to the affected areas at the earliest. Drones can also locate people stranded in difficult locations during such hazardous situations, and help can be sent to them at the earliest.
In your professional journey so far, which are the major milestones that bestowed you with utmost satisfaction, both at a personal level and on a professional level?
We have been rated as the third topmost university in the world by proving our worth at a competition held at Maryland AUVSI. Entering into a project worth two crores with Lockheed Martin gave us a unique recognition in the market and also made us distinguished, highlighting the fact that an international company is interested in investing in our project. The third milestone would be entering into a competition with the Indian Air Force, where amongst the 154 participants, we were selected for a 2.5 crore project. We joined hands with the Adani group, and after completion of the project, we got awarded the Best Communication Architecture of Drones'by IAF.
Apart from the aerial vehicles, we are trying to develop an intelligent transport system on the ground by introducing cars or other vehicles. Recently Indian Navy has also approached us for their under water project, which is yet another milestone for us.
What are the current changes in market behaviour you anticipate, and what are the opportunities you foresee in the development of drone technology?
The global commercial drone market has been anticipated to reach around $2 billion by the year 2028 or 2029, registering a CAGR of approximately 58 percent..Drones have made their prominence quite clear across the segments like real
