Dr. Sanjay Pandey, CEO of LifeCare Hospitals Group, shares insights about this exciting journey in an exclusive interview with CEO Insights. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

Your stellar academic career was followed by a robust professional journey of over more than two decades. What have been some of the biggest takeaways from this journey?

Throughout my healthcare career, I’ve had the privilege of serving as both a clinician and an administrator. Starting as a surgeon, I found immense satisfaction in treating patients and earning their trust. My transition to an administrative role provided valuable insights into financing, business expansion, and strategic management. Over time, I honed my expertise in finance, operations, and strategic planning through continuous learning. Reflecting on my journey, I acknowledge my achievements while recognizing there’s still much to accomplish. Two key take aways emerge: prioritizing quality care and achieving clinical excellence. As both a clinician and administrator, I’ve consistently applied my expertise to improve clinical outcomes and service excellence within hospital settings. These experiences have been instrumental in expanding existing facilities and launching new projects.

LifeCare Hospitals are well-known for being at the cutting edge of healthcare technologies. Tell us about this approach.

There are two major aspects to our technology approach: medical and operational. On the operational side, we are upgrading our software systems; including implementing Electronic Medical Records (EMR), integrating with all relevant functions and ensuring all patient touch points create an ease & engaging experience. This transition towards a paperless environment aims to minimize errors associated with manual processes.

On the medical side, we consistently adopt the latest technology available in the market. For instance, we are currently upgrading the CT scan in our two year-old hospital, demonstrating our commitment to providing our patients and doctors with the newest technology. We continually update our equipment and technology to ensure the highest quality of care across all our hospitals. Additionally, we have a structured program to upgrade our
medical capital expenditures periodically.

How would you describe the outcomes of this tech-savvy, cutting-edge approach?

Over the past nine months, we achieved remarkable clinical outcomes, while maintaining zero errors and safety incidents. Our hospital-acquired infection rate and catheter-associated infections are also at zero. In fact, we mandate consistently with exceeding standard benchmarks across all clinical parameters, which we monitor and review weekly as well as monthly to ensure high standards across all our hospitals.

In terms of technological advancements, we have initiated simultaneous bilateral knee and hip joint replacement surgeries and spine stabilization procedures. We are now expanding into neurological surgeries, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). Additionally, we are constructing a new cancer hospital equipped with state-of-the-art radiotherapy technology. We are focused on enhancing our capabilities in neurology, neurosurgery, functional neuro- surgery, oncology, and radiation oncology. We aim to integrate tertiary and quaternary care programs within our system to better serve our patients. Furthermore, we are planning to introduce a multi-organ transplant program as well.

Before adopting the latest technology just simplify the business processes, digital plat-forms, and newly trained clinical talent with advanced techniques is crucial

How does this approach translate into financial stability and profitability for LifeCare Hospitals?

The expenses across all our hospitals have remained stable and within benchmark standards, showing no significant fluctuations. We have grown more than 70 percent in annual revenue for two successive financial years. This is a strong testament to our effective expense control while undergoing rapid growth.

Tell us about your leadership approach and governance model at LifeCare Hospitals?

Our leadership approach is largely about adaptability with respect to the situations. We adapt and change based on the context, team, and team size. We prioritize an open system to collectively discuss problems and, solutions are developed as a team. I see myself as a part of the team, participating rather than commanding. We also make sure that our decision-making process is democratic.

We have a structured meeting program where I connect with all the hospital heads weekly and also conduct monthly reviews of each unit in person. During these reviews, I provide guidance, support and mentorship. I also assist with leadership development, sales and marketing strategies, introducing new clinical specialties, and recruiting clinical talent. My goal is to ensure that our hospital heads feel supported and energized. We continuously seek new clinical talent to expand our programs and enhance our services.
How do you nurture talent and leadership within LifeCare Hospitals?

It is essential to have a strong leadership team to grow your healthcare services footprint. I focus on nurturing and developing my team to meet the expectations of patients, management and the organization. This involves training, establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs), fostering a culture of patient centric, empathetic care, and retaining top talent to maintain high-quality services.

Some talent can be sourced from the market, but in a lot of cases, we push towards constant development and to nurture internal competencies on sustainable basis.

Going forward, what are the latest endeavours undertaken by LifeCare Hospitals?

We are prioritizing the standardization and simplification of business processes. We are deploying advanced digital technologies, updating a range of services, and emphasizing continuous training for our staff. These efforts aim to enhance efficiency, improve patient care, and ensure that operations remain at the forefront of medical excellence.

Furthermore, we are developing a comprehensive oncology and Radiation Oncology program as an independent unit, which will significantly enhance our oncology services. This initiative will help us build a robust oncology program, addressing a critical need in our healthcare offerings.

What would be your advice to budding healthcare leaders?

Before adopting the latest technology just simplify the business processes, digital platforms, and newly trained clinical talent with advanced techniques is crucial. What was relevant 20 years ago is no longer applicable today, and current practices will become outdated in 5 - 10 years. Therefore, continuous upgrading is essential. Additionally, transitioning to a paperless system is imperative not only to meet government requirements but also to ensure continuity of patient care. From a business perspective, the rise of insurance coverage calls for strong partnerships with corporate and insurance entities. This will help us maintain a broad reach and expand our services effectively.
