Dr Sanjeev Gera

Cardiologist

The heart is a relentless powerhouse that beats more than 100,000 times daily. Yet, heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally, claiming nearly 18 million lives each year. Cardiac care is a privilege rather than a basic right in several underprivileged and remote communities that lack access to timely diagnosis and treatment. However, cardiologists are working round the clock to bridge the gap by making cardiac care more affordable and accessible through innovative technologies, mobile health clinics, and telemedicine.

Dr Sanjeev Gera is one such cardiologist who is shaping a future where quality heart care is not a privilege but a right for all. With over two decades of experience, he has revolutionized cardiac treatment through cutting-edge procedures such as TAVR, stent less angioplasties, and imaging-guided interventions, making treatments safer, more precise, and cost effective.

His impact goes far beyond the hospital walls and national boundaries through international OPDs, where he brings life-saving care to underserved communities. An ardent believer in 'prevention is better than cure', Dr Sanjeev has conducted more than 1,000 awareness camps to fortify people with knowledge to protect their hearts.

Engaging in an immersive interaction with CEO Insights magazine, Dr Sanjeev shares his leadership approach, future roadmap, and much more. Let's read about it.

How are health techs used in decision making and treatment, and what are the latest tools in hospitals?
Heart care is undergoing a revolution with hospitals adopting cutting-edge techno -logies such as cardiac MRI, multi-slice 3D CT scans, and 3D echocardiography to diagnose heart disorders quickly, safely, and affordably. We also have AI-driven cathlabs that enable us to treat complex cardiac cases. In addition, we leverage home based monitoring and telecardiology to guarantee the best results.

We, at Fortis Hospital Noida, were recently recognized as one
of the leading facilities for young heart attack patients. Our goal is to deliver the best cardiac care possible by incorporating state of-the-art technology into treatment and decision-making processes.

What challenges stop people from making healthy choices, and how can these challenges be addressed to help them make better decisions?
A healthy lifestyle is hampered by a lack of time, energy, motivation, and knowledge about silent heart disease. People use low-cost, non-evidence-based therapies because of myths about high treatment costs, which results in delayed diagnosis.

We can overcome this by promoting health awareness and public education via social media and campaigns. There is also a dire need to enhance public hospital facilities so as to facilitate access to high-quality healthcare. When combined, the above factors and approaches can lead to the prevention of heart diseases.

My strategy is to enable my team through continuous learning so that we can develop professionally to provide the best patient care possible

Can you share your leadership approach and the methodologies you follow to lead your team?
I believe that leadership is learned through experience and the outcomes of decisions made for patients. My strategy is to enable my team through continuous learning so that we can develop professionally to provide the best patient care possible. Establishing a safe, encouraging work environment where everyone can succeed, is what leadership is all about.

What milestones in your professional journey have provided you with the greatest satisfaction, both personally and profes - sionally?
My journey in cardiology has been shaped by several milestones including completing my MBBS and Master's in Medicine from prestigious institutions in Delhi. I pursued a doctorate in Cardiology from the renowned Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi.

Advanced training in non-surgical valve replacements, heart failure management, and stentless angioplasties allowed me to specialize in complex cardiac inter -ventions. I have performed the highest number of stentless angioplasties, especially in young heart attack patients.
As Senior Director at Fortis Hospital, Noida, I mentor young cardiologists and serve as a faculty member at national and international conferences. Having conducted over 1,000 heart disease awareness camps and public lectures is another feather in my cap. Apart from this, I have held OPDs in more than ten countries to treat underprivileged heart patients. I am also involved with digital platforms for talks and podcasts on heart attack prevention.

What is the future destination you are aiming for in your career?
I am trying to make high-quality cardiac care more accessible and affordable, especially for rural and underprivileged communities. We are witnessing an increased incidence of heart attacks in young patients since COVID-19 and I am working continuously to recognize the root cause and drive advancements through research and technology. My priority and focus are on creating low-cost, affordable, and effective innovations to prevent and treat heart ailments, with special attention given to premature heart attacks.
