Ramesh Chandra Ralhan

Managing Director

India is now the second-largest telecommunications market in the world. In India, the telecommunications sector is quickly expanding and undergoing several changes. It has experienced different revolutions, resulting in fierce industry competition. The launch of improved telecom technologies like 5G, as well as the advent of several advanced and innovative cloud technologies, has propelled the telecom industry's growth. The organizations are working to provide affordable technology for the public, rejuvenate mature urban markets, and contribute to balanced economic growth.

Ramesh Chandra Ralhan, the Managing Director of NR Switch N Radio Services, has been a part of this industry since the beginning, from the birth of the telecom market in India to the latest emergence of the 5G network. Ramesh has worked in the telecom sector for about 48 years now and has witnessed it evolve at every phase. Below is an excerpt of Ramesh’s interview with CEO Insights.

What inspired you to venture into the managed services domain and what motivates you to keep going today as an industry leader?
After completing my engineering degree in 1974, I spent 13 years working in the electronics and telecommunications industry. Eventually, in 1986, I decided to venture out and establish my own firm in the telecommunications domain. The Indian government had opened up the telecom market to private companies, and I was one of the first to start producing telecom equipment. We began working with Nokia in 1996 when wireless communication first entered the Indian market and completed their first MSC in the country; after that,
we never looked back and continued our journey in the telecom business. Each project in the telecom business has a large rollout followed by its operation, which is a difficult task of constantly maintaining the network. As a result, we accepted the position and chose to pursue a career in managed services. We began by offering the workforce to telecom OEMs such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Alcatel Lucent, as well as other telecom operators in the country and overseas. Following that, we began the same business on a turnkey basis, and currently, we provide numerous services in many circles throughout India and abroad.

I want India to be known for having the greatest engineering talents in the world

How would you define NR Switch N Radio Services as an organization and its position in the market? What is the unique proposition that your organization offers to clients?
NR Switch N Radio Services is a company that provides services to a variety of industries, including telecommunications, defense, education, and finance. We differ from others in that we take on the task from beginning to end, train the individuals, and evolve with them. We also handle the rollout activities with various OEMs and subsequently take over their role for maintenance and operation. While doing so, we created our own ERP and a variety of software products, putting us ahead of our competitors in terms of service delivery. NR Switch N Radio Services has kept up with the changing landscape in all of these fields and has trained professionals in each. We have Telecom Academy, and we are the first organization in the country to have a live switch on our premises, which means you can make a call in My Switch, and we give on-the-job training to all engineers, whether they work for us or anyone else.

How are you keeping yourself updated with the changing trends of the managed services domain? What steps do you take to implement your experiences and learnings across your company’s operations?
Today, practically all networks have remote monitoring and auto control,
which makes our task of providing users services in numerous domains more challenging. Moving forward, we've created a number of products that provide our customers access to an online network. These are systems that we designed, built, and operate. We've kept up with the changing world and have progressed from 4G to 5G, which means we're on the verge of a technological revolution, and our firm is educating workers in new fields like blockchain and machine language. At NR Switch N Radio Services, we prepare our employees to embrace and confront technological advances, which distinguishes us and our services.

In your professional journey so far, which are the experiences that bestowed you with utmost satisfaction – both as an individual and as an industry leader?
NR Switch N Radio Services has taught over 10,000 individuals, which brings me great pleasure, and many of them have gone on to work in the field in various positions both in India and overseas. Our engineers were trained to provide services to all operators in the nation and overseas. I'm proudest when I see our trained employees or former workers succeeding in other sectors, whether it's with operators or OEMs in India or overseas.

In the light of your demonstrated history of working in the construction industry, what advice would you give to the budding technology leaders?
I would encourage the leaders to train Indian engineers; we should be proud of them whether they serve the country or other nations. I want India to be known for having the greatest engineering talents in the world. We must train our people to disperse over the world and undertake leadership roles. We should not be recognized just for providing manpower to other nations, but also for delivering the world's most talented engineers.
