The University of Sydney has produced exceptional Indian alumni who have become influential industry leaders. Renowned for their expertise in business, architecture, medicine, and technology, these individuals exemplify innovation and global impact. Their achievements highlight the University's role in nurturing talent and shaping influential global leaders who bridge cultures and drive progress.

Ritwik Sengupta is an accomplished leader who began his career as an architect before pursuing a Master's Degree in project management at the University of Sydney, specializing in Building Services. Upon returning to India, he joined Consulting Engineering Services (India), where he gained multifaceted experience across various departments. Inspired by experts like Professors David Rowe and Fergus Fricke, he transitioned into project coordination and contributed to notable projects, including the National Stock Exchange HQ, Mumbai. He then progressed with Bechtel Corp, where he worked on large-scale power plant projects, with multidisciplinary engineering teams, which helped in refining his teaming capabilities and leadership traits.

The disruptions following the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. marked a turning point in his career, driving him to pivot from Project Design roles to Marketing & Project management roles. Subsequently, he successfully managed projects across diverse sectors, including Oil & Gas, Fossil Power, Nuclear power, ITES and Real Estate. His experiences at Simon Carves India and NCR Corp enhanced his negotiation and leadership skills, particularly during financial crises, while further emphasizing the importance of team synergy and integrity. He acknowledges the opportunity to learn from leaders he met in customer organizations, like ICICI , SBI, Blackstone India. Post-COVID, he co-founded Nelsa Project Consultants(formerly Ascenders) to provide high quality, cost-effective PMC services in Real Estate and Infrastructure sector.

In an exclusive interaction with CEO Insights, Ritwik Sengupta, Partner at Nelsa Project Consultants (Ascenders), enligh- tens us more about his exceptional journey and leadership traits.
Tell us about the most valuable lesson or experience you gained from The University of Sydney?
One of the most valuable lessons I gained from The University of Sydney was the integration of academic knowledge with practical application. Professors Fergus Frickie and David Rowe emphasized the relevance of environmental controls in projects, which I now see reflected in sustainable building practices.

The University excelled in bridging theory and practice, with visiting professionals from Sydney City Rail, New South Wales Public Works Department etc., sharing real-world challenges. Their insights demonstrated how textbook learning connects to field applications, highlighting decision-making complexities. Engaging discussions reinforced this understanding, providing a robust foundation for applying engineering principles effectively in real-world scenarios.

How have the skills you acquired in and out of the classroom of the University of Sydney been applied to your current position?
The skills I acquired at the University of Sydney have greatly influenced my career. The learning environment, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, was invaluable. Interacting with industry leaders inspired me. The mentorship from Prof. David Rowe and many leadership professionals instilled the importance of simplicity, humility, and respect in my approach to leadership. These lessons continue to guide me, emphasizing practical knowledge, continuous learning, and maintaining meaningful relationships in my current position. During my stay in Sydney, with my uncle Late Dr A C Sengupta and Aunt Siobhan Sengupta, I had my best induction into ‘life-skills’.

How have you made use of the alumni network while you were a student or after graduating? Illustrate the accessibility of faculty to students at The University of Sydney.
During my time at the University of Sydney, I actively engaged with the alumni network, benefiting from the strong connections the university maintains with its graduates. The alumni association frequently organizes meetings, which foster meaningful interactions with fellow alumni and some times with faculty members who visit.

I've been fortunate to meet the Chancellor and Dean during their visits to India. The faculty at Sydney University was always accessible, offering mentorship and support, making the networking experience deeply enriching and integral to my professional growth.
What memory stands out the most from your experiences at The University of Sydney?
I recollect my meeting with professor, David Rowe, on my first day. Instead of jumping into academics, he invited me for coffee and took the time to ensure I felt comfortable in the new environment. He then encouraged a peer-like relationship, advising me to call him by his first name. He guided me with genuine care, advising me on course choices to save time and money. When I was about to leave for India after the course, Prof. David Rowe offered two job references, showing how deeply he cared for his students' success. His kindness and mentorship left a lasting impact on me.

Tell us about your leadership approach. What are the guidelines/ methodologies you follow as a leader?
My leadership approach is rooted in basic human values including reciprocity and integrity. I believe that being a good human being is essential to being a good leader. I emphasize two key principles with my teams, namely integrity and mutual respect. I encourage and practicability of approach, without compromising one's values. I also believe in showing respect and gratitude towards our parents, as their sacrifices shape our lives. Additionally, I stress the importance of giving back to society and practicing humility.

What future destination are you heading towards?
The future destination involves two key aspects. First, my company is growing steadily, moving from one project in 2021-22 to several projects now, and I am (along with my Partner) focused on further expanding our business while ensuring the well-being of our employees. Second, after achieving the company's growth and a significant footprint, I aim to eventually retire and focus on giving back to the society, serving rural communities. My parents used to stress on serving people ‘who are not related to you’.
