Curiosity and passion are some of the most indispensable aspects of leadership. Inspired by his newfound passion for IT as well as technologies such as Linux and Open Source, Sreeram P. A. left his well-paid secure job of being a Physics Professor and joined Tis Labs, an IT infrastructure service startup as the CTO of the firm. Over time, his diligent effort, as well as able leadership, has helped the firm become one of the leading IT firms with strong values such as technology and discipline at its core and also grown into having a PAN India presence. Tis Labs also provides an excellent learning environment for its employees to grow and excel in their respective fields and motivates them to face challenges and succeed.

In an exclusive interview with CEO Insights, Sreeram shares about his professional back ground, the unique work culture practiced at Tis Labs, and much more:

Give us a brief account of your professional background.
I started my career as a Professor in Physics at S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, and later joined the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata. Since my Ph. D. days, I had a passion for working in Computer Systems and had developed a passion for Linux and Open Source. During my stint at IISER, Kolkata, when I got an opportunity to lead a small group of IT professionals in a startup who were motivated to work on challenging projects, I decided to give-up a relatively secure job. Since then, along with my colleagues, I have been working on building-up TIS Labs as a go-to Company for all those clients and partners, who want someone to be a part of their solution program. I started as the CTO of the company and now am the Director of Technology and Strategic Innovation.

How would you define Tis Labs as an organization and its position in the market? What is the unique proposition that your organization offers to its employees?
TIS Labs is an IT Infrastructure Services Company, where we are into providing solutions, consulting, implementation, and support services to our clients. Based on our client’s requirements, we provide both consulting and solutions
them as an end-to-end solution. Be it implementation of a Private Cloud, High-Performance Computing system, Data lake solutions, Virtualization, or any other state of-the-art IT Infra structure, we have created a niche in the market as the one company that not only implements, but adds value to the project.

For us, technology is an enabler, and we are there to learn, understand and use it


TIS Labs is the leader in HPC consulting, deployment, and support in India, with nearly 150 deployments of various sizes all over the country and some in South East Asia. We have a PAN India presence in a variety of verticals like the Automobile Industry, Educational Institutions, Manufacturing Industry, Banking, Finance, Insurance, Telecom, Government, and many others.

Tell us about the exposure your company offers to its employees. Shed some light on the unique work culture of Tis Labs?
Thanks to our partnership with multiple OEMs and our proximity to our past clients, we are constantly provided opportunities to work on customized solutions. While the technologies used may be standard, the solutions based on customer requirements are always unique. This opens up an opportunity to learn something new, not just at the technological level, but also at the level of how each customer looks at the same problem differently.

At TIS Labs, we encourage this learning process. We do not believe that there is only 'one way' of doing something. Thus, our approach is also that of a Lab, where we put in a lot of effort on internally working on solutions, checking the viability, creating & modifying the solutions and then presenting it to the customers. Most of our employees are therefore, highly regarded by our clients, since they offer more than just the action of implementing.

Tell us about the technology environment the employees get to work in. What are the latest cyber-sec technologies the company is working with?
One of the unique features of TIS Labs is that we believe in taking-up technical challenges. For us, technology is an enabler, and we are there to learn, understand and use it. Thus, whether it is Virtualization, Cloud, High Performance Computing, Data lake solutions, or any other project, we approach it intending to understand and deliver within the restrictive time frame, without compromising on the quality of work. Thus, what our employees get is the courage to take-up a difficult task, learn the
process and deliver because, they know there is a strong backend that will help them through any kind of difficulties. If there is one thing any sincere employee in our organization feels, it is the confidence to take-up any task.

On the technology front, we started essentially as a Linux, open-source infrastructure service provider. Our portfolio in the past few years however, includes Virtualization, Opensource Cloud Infrastructure deployment, High-Performance Computing, Data lake, and other cutting-edge technologies.

What are the ways of recognizing top talents & great performances within the organization? Reflect on the unique aspects of your HR policy. What are the growth opportunities and recognition the employees can expect from the organization?
We incentivize based on projects. So, an employee can get incentives all through the year, instead of a specific time. We even incentivize the work of our non-technical staff, based on their performance. Our experience has shown that with some amount of talent, but enough sincerity and hard work, a person can bloom into a fantastic resource. We encourage our employees to take ownership and deliver, instead of treating them like working hands.

We do not have a very strong hierarchical structure within the company and everyone is highly approachable. We expect work to be completed on time and hence if that requires additional hours , employees are expected to put in that extra time. We also encourage them to use their free time to learn new technologies and upgrade their knowledge.

Dr. Sreeram was born in Tripunithura, a small town in Kerala, India, and brought-up in Kolkata, India. He started his career at S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata first as a researcher and then as a faculty. He then moved to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata as a faculty in Physics. His passion for the IT field made him quit his job as a faculty and join Tis Labs. Presently, he is serving as the Director - Technology & Strategic Innovation at the firm. He has done his Master's in Physics at IIT, Mumbai (then Bombay), a Ph. D. in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics at the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, and a post-doctorate at Tel Aviv University, Israel.
