Bahrain has an economic freedom score of 69.9, making its economy the 40th freest in the 2021 Index. Currency of Bahrain the Bahraini Dinar, is the second highest valued currency unit in the world. The country heavily invested in banking and tourism sectors till late 20 twentieth century, and has a very successful finance industry. However, its economy is mostly dependent on oil & gas. Bahraini economy is the most diversified economy amongst all regional Gulf Countries. The country has 406 financial institutions contributing to 16.7 percent of total GDP, manufacturing industries contribute to 14.5 percent, transport & communications contribute to 6.8 percent construction works contribute to 6.6 percent, real estate contributes to 4.1 percent and hotels & restaurants contribute to 2.4 percent of total GDP. Other service industries contribute to 18.7 percent, and the contribution of oil sector is 20.8 percent of the total GDP.
Bahrain doesn't impose any tax on personal income, and most of the companies are not subjected to corporate tax, but 46 percent tax is levied on oil companies. The country permits 100percent foreign ownership of business or branch office. There are numerous foreign businesses that have done well in Bahrain and are dominant in major sectors such as oil & gas, engineering, and information & communications technology (ICT). The country was ranked as 23rd most favorable destination for expatriates worldwide in 2020.
