A Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a dual role that combines the functions of Chief Executive and Manager. COOs design and implement policies to promote company culture & vision and oversee operations to keep business on track. They are the company’s second incommand and play an important role in improving the efficiency of the business. The key member of senior management team, he/she reports only to the CEO of the company. A COO must have excellent people skills, business acumen and exemplary work ethics. Their main goal is to secure the functionality of business to drive extensive and sustainable growth.
Efficiency of an organization is the responsibility of COO. They have to set comprehensive goal for the performance and growth of the organization. Their main responsibilities include designing & implementation of business strategies, plans & procedures, setting-up comprehensive goals for performance & growth, establishing policies that promote company culture & vision, and overseeing daily operations of the company & the work of executives, Other responsibilities include leading employees to encourage maximum performance & dedication, evaluating performance by analyzing & interpreting data and metrics, writing & submitting reports to the CEO in all matters of importance, assisting CEO in fundraising ventures, participating in extension activities and managing relationship with partners & vendors.
A COO is expected to be a man of aptitude in decision making & problem solving, with excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding organizational and leadership abilities, Working knowledge of IT/ Business infrastructure & MS Office, working knowledge of data analysis & performance/operation metrics and ability to demonstrate competency in strategic planning and business development are also the qualities one must possess to be a COO.
