Top 10 Executive Directors in India - 2024
In the recent past, the role of Executive Directors (EDs) in India has expanded with a changing business scenario and increased governance norms. Given India’s economy, one that is growing exponentially in size, with an expansive entrepreneurial landscape, and partnerships around the globe and foreign direct investments, it is an imperative that companies are led by strong leadership. The trend is particularly evident in executive directors’ perceived presence across traditional sectors like manufacturing and finance; and those that are emerging, such as technology, e-commerce and green energy.
"There has been an increase in focus on diversity in leadership"
Several reasons have led to the growth of EDs in the Indian companies. First, corporate governance reforms, especially those promoted by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) through strong rules have put a greater accountability and a grip on corporate activities. For this reason, more and more companies are hiring EDs to monitor compliance and make ethical decisions.
Additionally, Indian businesses are going global in numbers and they need executives who can work cross culturally and are strategic. The result is EDs who run day-to-day operations as well as steer the organisation towards long term growth. The importance of succession planning has been recognized by many Indian conglomerates and now, many are grooming internal talent to assume executive leadership roles.
Correspondingly, there has been an increase in focus on diversity in leadership and the parallel rise of Executive Directors. Proactively, companies are putting women and leaders of diverse backgrounds into executive roles, thus bringing a broader diversity of perspectives to these decisions. Finally, the growth of Executive Directors in India is indicative of a country growing its corporate governance standards, pursuing global business aspirations, and the focus on inclusive leadership, all of which are changing the executive landscape.
