Engineers to Entrepreneurs: How IITs are Contributing to the Growing Indian Economy
Today driven by the strong software and IT services sector, India has become one of the largest service exporters in the world. IT services plays a major role in contributing to the GDP of Indian economy. The Indian IT/ ITeS industry has a leading position globally and has been progressively contributing to the growth of exports and creation of employment opportunities. In the FY21-22, and FY22-23, telecommunications, computer and information services were the country’s largest export goods. They accounted for 70 percent of total service exports and 30 percent of total exports that year. This increased to 40 percent of total service exports during the FY22-23.

The abundance of low-cost knowledge-based services in India is the reason that the demand for these services has not fallen down even amid the global economic slowdown. This is the major factor in making India the fastest growing economy. Thanks to the thousands of engineering colleges in India, from where passes out lakhs of engineers which soon becomes a part of this service industry. This is where we will understand the importance and contribution of IITs to the country.
While most of the engineering college alumni contribute by working in IT service sector, IIT alumni have great entrepreneur spirit and had laid foundation to numerous tech-based companies there by contributing to the economy in a large margin. Infosys, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Zomato, Pinstorm, Quikr are a very few of the long list of successful entrepreneur ideas originated from IIT heads. Groww, Turtlemint and Delhivery are another few list of startups from IIT Alumni. IITans are creators of opportunities. They are fuelling startup culture in India, thus creating Indian technologies and providing jobs to lakhs.
