Top 10 Leaders in Agriculture - 2022
There was a time in the history when India has to import even the basic food grains to feed its population. Green revolution helped the country not only to become self reliant in food production, but also to be one of the highest exporters of food grains in the world. As per the Second Advance Estimates for 2019-20, the total country's food grain production is estimated to be a record 291.95 million tons. Today, agriculture is not only meeting the demand for food grains, but also the demand for development. In recent years, agricultural sector has been diversified to produce commercial crops and horticultural crops viz., fruits, vegetables, spices, cashew, areca nut, coconut and floricultural products like flowers, orchids and many more. Demand for dairy and other animal husbandry products is also increasing both inside and outside the country.
GDP contribution by the agriculture sector in India was 19.9 percent in 2020-21, increasing from 17.8 percent recorded in 2019-20. With the change in technologies and policies, the farming sector is growing in India. With the growing population and increasing demand for food, the improvement in the agriculture and agri secor is the need of the hour. The recent evolution of digital technology in farming has accelerated the growth by ensuring high crop yield. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), remote sensing, big data, block chain and IoT are transforming agricultural value chains and modernizing operations.
The productivity level in Indian agriculture is very low when compared to the productivity levels of other countries. Even though the country is the largest producer of many food grains like wheat and rice, the country ranks very low in the productivity level. Any progress in this is possible only if the farmers get educated and technology gets integrated to the agriculture sector in India.
