Commonly known as the 'Cultural Capital of India', Kolkata is the third largest economy in India after Mumbai and Delhi, with a GDP of $60.447 billion. It is the prime business, commercial and financial hub of Eastern and North-Eastern India. Kolkata is home to many large public and private sector corporations, and the major industries in the region include include steel, heavy engineering, mining, minerals, cement, pharmaceuticals, food processing, agriculture, electronics, textiles, and jute. The city is also a central hub for all import/export activities in the East Indian region, as the port of Kolkata is one of the oldest, most sophisticated and busiest ports in the region.
While 0.81 percent of the city's workforce was employed in the primary sector (agriculture, forestry, mining, and more), 15.49 percent population were employed in the secondary sector (industrial and manufacturing) and 83.69 percent in the tertiary sector (service industries). Despite the early set back due to pandemic, Kolkata has now vaccinated more than 86,30,000 people and this progress is bringing the city’s business landscape back to a more stable condition. This once again opens up box of opportunities for the starups & aspirant entrepreneurs in the city. With increased level of government interventions and support, Kolkata could regain its old-world-charm without much delay.
Needless to say, finding ways to make businesses does wonders and even creating new markets itself is nothing new for the city. With government support, the city has significant potential to become an industrial hub. Mentioning some of the projects in the pipeline, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal recently said, “Our government will always be on the side of the industry. We have also framed some policies as well.” Talking about the recent projects, she added “The government is ready with the first phase of the Deocha Pachami coal mine (on vacant government land) and also ready with the rehabilitation package for the second phase. An investment of Rs 15,000 crore will be made. Once completed, there will be no shortage of electricity for the next 100 years in West Bengal and will also be cheap”.
