Top 10 Leaders in Maldives - 2022
Maldives, the island lying Southwest to Arabian Sea, is ranked 31st among 40 countries in the Asia Pacific region. The overall score of the country is below the regional and world averages. With an economic freedom score of 55.2, it is the 136th freest country in the 2021 index. Maldives has a population of around 540,000 people dispersed across 185 islands. The country has high literacy with the literacy rate approaching cent percent and a life expectancy of over 78 years. Only 3.6 percent of the population is living below the poverty line in Maldives.
The key contributors to the economy is tourism and fishing. The tourism sector accounts to 28 percent of the total GDP of Maldives and 60 percent of the foreign exchange receipts. 90 percent of government tax revenue is from input duties and tourism related taxes. Other than tourism, fishing is the next leading sector. Agriculture and manufacturing adds limited contributions to economy. Most of the staple foods are imported to the country. The limited availability of cultivated land is one of the major reasons for low agricultural production.
Garment production, boatbuilding and handicrafts are the major industries in Maldives which contribute to about 18 percent of GDP. Starting business in Maldives is relatively expensive. New foreign investment code still excludes several sectors from foreign participation. Although the rules for trade and investment have been liberalized, the Maldivian business community is small and close knit, so new market entrants may find it difficult to make contacts. Other than hotel brands operating in Maldives, there is only limited foreign investment in the country.
