| | NOVEMBER 20244The deteriorating mental health of students and environments that lead them to unfavorable environments is becoming a serious concern. It is no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic became catalytic in deteriorating the mental health scenario in the world. Studies have continued to show increased levels of anxiety and depression, especially among college students. Maybe more than ever, faculty members are talking to students about mental health. According to data presented by the Ministry of Education in Lok Sabha last year, 33 students have died by suicide at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) since 2018. Adding to the woes, the data shows that nearly half of them are from the SC, ST and OBC communities. This disturbing picture extends to the IIMs and NITs of the country, which registered a combined 28 deaths by suicides of students. Also, half of the students belonged to the SC, ST and OBC communities. Adding to the list is a final-year student, Akshith Bhukya, 24, who died allegedly by suicide in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. The institute's students' council says that they are concerned about the police investigation and has demanded forming a committee to probe into the circumstances surrounding the death. It is high time these elite institutions focus more on students' mental welfare. More scientifically designed programs need to be designed to help students and faculty manage stress. On behalf of the magazine, I extend condolences to Akshith's family and friends. This yearly special issue features some of the prestigious alumni of IIM Ahmedabad.Sujith VasudevanManaging Editoreditor@ceoinsightsindia.comMore Focus Needed on Students' Mental Health EditorialVol 05 · Issue 02 - 11 ·NOVEMBER, 2024 Publisher Alok ChaturvediSenior Designer Girisha M Visualizer Antony Arnold.
