Given the cut-throat competition across industries, we can't really blame employers for expecting new candidates to be smart generalists--go-getters producing outcomes beyond their technical or theoretical competence. But the limitations of traditional higher education systems in the country make supplementary education platforms promoting increased agility and learning aptitude all the more important, to say nothing of the need to create 'global', socially sensitive professionals. Promoting more collaborative approaches among educational institutes and defining new courses in this direction could go a long way toward this. Indian Institute of Management­Kozhikode (IIM-Kozhikode) is setting a great precedent in the matter by launching a Certificate Program in `Management of Social Initiatives' to equip learners to be change-makers by boosting their competencies in designing and managing social initiatives. The 11-month program aims at helping students gain conceptual understanding and insights across three pillars of social initiatives ­ corporate social responsibility, not-for-profit ventures, and social entrepreneurship. With its roots dating back to 1997, IIM-Kozhikode set off its journey with a batch of 42 students and has grown tremendously over the years to a current batch strength of 356 odd students, making it one of the fastest-growing management schools in the country. IIMK is also one of the few centers for the Development of Digital Libraries in the world and is a country leader. The institute has a robust, envious alumni network spread worldwide, and this special issue is dedicated to them. Do let us know your thoughts.
