| |NOVEMBER 20224Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the leading public health problems worldwide. The global estimated prevalence of CKD is between 11.7-15.1 percent, and patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) needing renal replacement therapy is estimated between 4.902 and 7.083 million. It's quite a time bomb with a ticking alarm. It's undisputed that living a healthy lifestyle is one of the safest and most cost-effective ways to improve one's quality of life and prevent and manage chronic diseases. CKD is no different. The current CKD management guidelines recommend that patients adhere to a healthy diet, perform at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity, manage their body weight, abstain from tobacco use, and limit alcohol. Acquiring the right knowledge about CKD and applying that knowledge the right way could go a long way toward managing the disease. Patients need to learn all they can about kidney disease, especially their condition. Knowledge acquisition also involves talking to other patients, asking questions on genuine forums, reading articles, attending Kidney Smart Classes, and watching educational videos. Remember, working with your care team to determine how the information applies to you is of paramount importance. If your kidney disease is severe, make sure to understand all your treatment options--from home dialysis to transplant.
