| | FEBRUARY 202419by green building certifications. A greener and more sustainable built environment can be achieved with these tools.Technology has also played a significant role in promoting sustainable and energy-efficient architecture. The use of building information modeling software has allowed architects to create detailed 3D models of buildings that can simulate energy usage and performance. The technology allows architects to identify areas for improvement in a building's design to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability.Historical Effect of Technology on ArchitectureArchitectural history highlights the impact of technology on architecture and, in particular, the impact of technological advancements on architecture. The history of architecture is as broad and complex as the history of civilization itself. The stepped (and later) smooth-sided pyramids found in ancient Egypt are an early example of the impact of technology on architecture. Egyptians were able to use simple technology (by modern standards) to create sophisticated monuments. Understanding basic engineering principles (to prevent the collapse of constructed structures) and physics (to build ramps at the right angle to carry massive stones) were some of the building techniques used by the Egyptians. Boats were used for fishing and trade in the past. Large blocks of stones weighing several tens of tons were safely transported on canals by ships to the spot where a particular pyramid was being constructed. After the Industrial Revolution, the impact of technology on architecture is particularly evident. The architecture and construction industries were transformed by scientific breakthroughs and technological advances during the Industrial Revolution. Technological advancements led to the emergence of modern architecture as a component of the broader Modernist movement. The modernist style of architecture embraced past styles and conventions in favor of a design focused on practical concerns, creating designs that straddled technology and architecture. The progress in building technologies, including the construction of steel frames and the curtain wall, was the reason for these developments. Our changing climate will continue to be reflected in technology and architecture. To respond to climate risks that are particular to their location, homes must meet certain design, construction, and safety standards. California, for example, must meet Chapter 49 requirements for wildland-urban interface fire code requirements. We're hoping that design, tech, and architecture will contribute to safeguarding neighborhoods and inhabitants as our planet warms.Digital design and 3D modeling are already changing the face of architecture. Architects can push the boundaries of design and engineering due to their computational and analytical prowess, as these types of software and technology allow. The capabilities of these technologies are only going to get better, and we expect that materials and construction technology will also get more sophisticated to match the design abilities of imaginative and skilled architects and designers. GREEN BUILDING MATERIALS ARE ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF TECHNOLOGY PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY IN ARCHITECTURE. MATERIAL ADVANCEMENTS HAVE RESULTED IN THE CREATION OF ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS, SUCH AS REPURPOSED WOOD, BAMBOO, & BIOPLASTICS, THAT CAN BE EMPLOYED IN CONSTRUCTION. THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THESE MATERIALS IS LOWER THAN THAT OF TRADITIONAL BUILDING MATERIALS, WHICH CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERALL ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY OF ASTRUCTURE.
