| | AUGUST 20244St. Stephen's College, a constituent college of the University of Delhi, has been in the limelight recently, but for not-so-studious reasons. The row started when the college allegedly suspended around 100 first-year students for not attending morning assembly while also informing them that they could not appear in the next semester's exams. The news spread like wildfire. However, the college eventually did the right thing by withdrawing the decision."On Saturday, 17th February 2024, an email was sent from my office. It was a miscommunication, incorrectly worded and my sincere apologies for that. I was also not copied on that email, a practice which is normally followed when I instruct my office to communicate, in written mode, on my behalf. Let me therefore set right the matter through this email," clarified principal John Varghese. However, the college has also been at the receiving end of some positive news as well. The High Court recently ordered Delhi University (DU) to make sure that the allotment of postgraduate (PG) seats in St. Stephen's College is not disproportionately less than that of other DU-affiliated colleges. Additionally, the HC also directed the university to "consider framing an appropriate policy or guidelines to govern allocation/allotment of seats in PG courses amongst various colleges". It was in 2022 that St. Stephen's College approached the court, arguing that DU had been allocating a disproportionately low number of PG seats for the college.
