447 Cases of Adverse Reactions across India, Most are Minor Issues

On Saturday, 16th January, 2021, India scripted history by conducting the highest vaccinations in the world in a day. Nearly two lakh vaccines were administered in a day. However, looking at the larger picture across the world for adverse reactions post vaccination, India’s number stood at a low 447 in the first two days of the vaccination, while only three cases were initially hospitalized. Of these, two have already been discharged from AIIMS, New Delhi and Northern Railways Hospital, respectively, said the health ministry.

Additional health secretary Manohar Agnani said, “One case is still under observation in AIIMS, Rishikesh and is fine”.

Most of the 447 adverse cases are so far minor like fever, pain, headache, nausea, giddiness and mild allergic reactions like rashes and others. Manohar further added, “Protocols are in place for reporting, immediate case management at vaccination session sites, transportation and hospitalization and further care of such cases. Protocols are in place for systematic investigation and causality assessment of serious AEFIs”.

AIIMS worker who developed an allergic reaction after getting a Covaxin shot on Saturday was hospitalized.

However, reports from states said that at least 12 health workers who were administered vaccines on Saturday had to be hospitalized in Maharashtra, Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.
