InIn a pioneering move for brownfield airports in India, the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, operated by the Adani Group, has achieved a significant milestone by completing the first phase of 'twinning' its international terminal, T-2. The innovative approach involves the creation of a 'digital twin' using Building Information Modeling (BIM) through a Scan to BIM strategy.

Over a period of three months, a dedicated team of architects and engineers utilized LIDAR and GPR devices to scan the entire T2 building, the service utility building, and a 10-acre site. This comprehensive digital twin, known as the Airport Asset Information (AIM), faithfully reproduces existing structures, utilities, and buried services of the legacy infrastructure.

The AIM will serve as a crucial tool for designers in the upcoming renovation and upgrade projects, providing a realistic and detailed foundation for future development. The digital models, with their high fidelity and rich data, are designed to seamlessly integrate with all airport systems. This integration promises enhanced security measures, improved passenger experiences, and increased operational efficiencies for airline operators.

By capturing minute details of the real world, these digital twins enable the deployment of cutting-edge technology for planning, facility management, and sustainability. The successful completion of this initial twinning phase marks a milestone in airport infrastructure development, setting a precedent for future endeavors in brownfield airport transformations across the country.
