Adani Taps Top US Firms to Fight SEC Charges

TheThe Adani Group has kept on the same two big US law firms Kirkland & Ellis and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP-to fight their civil and criminal cases against charges by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as the Eastern District of New York. According to sources, charges include allegations that the company provided more than $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure the solar energy contracts for Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL).

On November 21, the US authorities filed charges against Adani Group founder Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and other officials for allegedly bribing someone. However, AGEL said that Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and senior executive Vneet S. Jaain have not been charged with FCPA violations.

The cases, consolidated under a single judge in a US court, underscore heightened scrutiny on Adani Group executives. Former Azure Power executives Ranjit Gupta and Rupesh Agarwal face charges of conspiracy to violate the FCPA, while individuals linked to Canadian institutional investor CDPQ, including Cyril Cabanes, Saurabh Agarwal, and Deepak Malhotra, are accused of obstruction of justice, including tampering with evidence and withholding critical information.

Quinn Emanuel is a Los Angeles-headquartered global litigation firm, having successfully tried more than 2,300 cases with an 88% success rate. The firm focuses on securities litigation, product liability, and regulatory investigations and has served the most notable clients such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Uber.

Kirkland & Ellis, headquartered in Chicago, has offices in 21 locations around the world and specializes in high-stakes commercial disputes, intellectual property litigation, and white-collar cases. The firm has represented companies like Johnson & Johnson and Volkswagen in complex environmental and product liability cases and has advised tech giants like Facebook and Google.

Neither the Adani Group nor the two law firms have responded to queries about the ongoing legal proceedings.

The allegations are mounting against the Adani Group, with US authorities intensifying investigations into corporate practices linked to Indian energy contracts. The involvement of top-tier US law firms indicates the group's robust legal strategy to address the charges.
