adaniAdani Total Gas Ltd, a city gas distribution company under the Adani Group, has unveiled plans for a pilot initiative centered on green hydrogen production and integration. This strategic move aims to expand its energy portfolio, establish a robust hydrogen ecosystem, and notably curtail CO2 emissions. The project involves employing advanced technologies to combine Green Hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas, catering to over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. GH2, derived from the electrolysis of water using renewable energy-generated electricity, will be blended, offering a lower carbon footprint compared to gas combustion while retaining equivalent heating capabilities.

The projected launch of the initiative is slated for the first quarter of 2024-25, aiming to gradually escalate the proportion of green hydrogen in the blend to around 8% or more, contingent upon regulatory authorizations, as outlined in a stock exchange disclosure by the Adani Group subsidiary. Following the successful completion of the trial phase, the integration of hydrogen-blended fuel will progressively extend to broader sections of the city and other licensed territories under Adani Total Gas.

According to research findings, employing an up to 8% hydrogen blend can potentially decrease emissions by up to 4%. Adani Total Gas intends to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, to share insights acquired during this pilot project. The goal is to foster a comprehensive understanding of hydrogen blending within India's city gas distribution network, examining operational aspects and assessing the compatibility of blended fuel with existing infrastructure.

Suresh P Manglani, Executive Director and CEO of Adani Total Gas, underscores the company's commitment to creating an environmentally sustainable operational framework. He emphasizes that this project aligns with their persistent efforts toward India's goal of achieving energy independence by 2047. By investing in innovative ventures like this, the company actively contributes to the industry's advancement and propels sustainable energy solutions.

Adani Total Gas is engaged in providing piped natural gas (PNG) to industrial, commercial, and residential consumers, along with compressed natural gas (CNG) for the transportation sector. Given its responsibility for gas distribution across 38 Geographical Areas (GAs) constituting 8% of India's population, the company holds a crucial role in the nation's endeavors to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix. Out of the 38 GAs, 19 are under ATGL's management, while the remaining are overseen by Indian Oil-Adani Gas Private Ltd, a joint venture split equally between Adani Total Gas and Indian Oil Corporation.
