AMD and Telecom Equipment Makers Team up to Provide Telecom Solutions
US chip maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has partnered with Indian 4G and 5G equipment makers such as VVDN and C-DoT to provide telecom solutions in the country, made possible by the purchase of programmable logic chip maker Xilinx. "We are bringing leading energy-efficient technology to India to power radios, servers and demands in data centers and at the edge and even RAN (Radio Access Network)," said Gilles Garcia, Business Director, Data Center Communications. Group, AMD.
AMD has approximately 10,000 employees in India engaged in research and development, validation, software development and chip architecture design. The company announced in July that it will invest $400 million in India over the next five years to strengthen its presence in chip design and software.
Garcia said AMD has received good feedback, and most local 4G and 5G players and server manufacturers are using its technology. "We're really trying to bring the ecosystem together and elevate that ecosystem and help it as much as we can," he said.
As a Fabless company that does not produce its own chips, AMD does not see opportunities to participate as much in the manufacturing sector. By helping local vendors like VVDN produce servers and radios, AMD is indirectly involved in making India a hub for the electronics industry, Garcia said.
