AMD Launches Cutting-Edge AI Chips for Business PCs and Laptops

Separator

AMD has introduced a fresh lineup of semiconductors tailored for AI-capable business laptops and desktops, aiming to bolster its presence in the burgeoning 'AI PC' sector. Anticipated to roll out in platforms offered by HP and Lenovo by the second quarter of 2024, these chips mark AMD's strategic move to seize a larger stake in this lucrative market segment, as stated in their press release.

PCs equipped with AI capabilities can execute resource-intensive tasks, such as running extensive language models and applications, directly on the device rather than relying on cloud computing. AMD has emphasized that its newest offerings, including the Ryzen PRO 8040 Series tailored for "business laptops and mobile workstations," along with the AMD Ryzen PRO 8000 Series desktop processor designed for business users, are optimized for these demands.

In early trading, AMD's shares surged by over 2%. Analysts suggest that the introduction of AI-enabled PCs could potentially drive a rebound in the PC market as consumers seek to enhance their systems with these innovative capabilities. The rise of generative AI technology has sparked considerable demand for sophisticated semiconductors capable of facilitating the development and execution of intricate AI applications.

AMD encounters fierce competition from Intel and Nvidia in the AI PC sector, with Nvidia particularly renowned for its leadership in graphics processing units (GPUs). In January, AMD launched the Ryzen 8000G Series desktop chips, designed to tackle the demanding workloads associated with AI-centric operations.

On the same day, Nvidia unveiled its own AI PC chips - the "GeForce RTX SUPER" desktop GPUs - saying Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung will release AI laptops featuring its technology. Intel also said in January it expects to "ship approximately 40 million AI PCs in 2024 alone".
