Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the Cabinet has given approval for the India AI Mission, allocating Rs 10,372 crore over five years to foster the development of AI in the country. This corpus will be utilized to establish a robust and scalable AI ecosystem through a public-private partnership model. "With an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore, one very ambitious India AI Mission that will encourage AI segment and ongoing research in this field...has been approved by the cabinet", Goyal said.

The implementation of the mission will be overseen by the IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IBD) within the Digital India Corporation (DIC). "PM (Narendra) Modi Ji has democratized technology. With AI mission, he will make computing power available to innovators, startups, students, and educational institutions", union IT and communications minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a statement.

During the press briefing following the Cabinet meeting, the minister stated that a supercomputing capacity, consisting of more than 10,000 GPUs (graphics processing units), will be provided to different stakeholders to facilitate the development of an AI ecosystem.

Goyal noted that there is a growing demand for GPU-based servers due to their ability to process data faster than CPU-based servers. He further mentioned that under the India AI Mission, startups, academia, researchers, and industry players will have access to the AI supercomputing infrastructure.

Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, emphasized on social media platform X that AI is positioned to serve as the dynamic catalyst for India's digital economy. "This program will catalyze India's AI ecosystem and position it as a force shaping the future of AI for India and the world. AI is one of the greatest inventions of our time, India will play a major role in shaping its future. That is ModiKiGuarantee", Chandrasekhar said. The minister stated that the mission will be advantageous for states like Kerala, which have, for years, lagged behind in establishing a strong tech ecosystem.
