CPCL and IIT-Madras Partner for Green Hydrogen Production
Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) has joined forces with IIT-Madras to manufacture green hydrogen. Under this collaboration, IIT-Madras will be responsible for developing electrolyzers, and CPCL will test the green hydrogen in its refinery. CPCL's Managing Director, Arvind Kumar, mentioned that the green hydrogen produced would be utilized for in-house purposes. He further stated that numerous industries would participate in this initiative, emphasizing that green hydrogen represents the future.
Stating that IIT-Madras could explore the use of green hydrogen in the mobility sector, CPCL Managing Director Arvind Kumar mentioned the company's commitment to providing the necessary utilities for production. He made these remarks during discussions with reporters at a conference on 'Emerging Technologies for the Chemical Sector' in Chennai. Addressing inquiries about the new refinery and petrochemical complex in Nagapattinam district, Kumar stated that board approval would be sought for various aspects.
"We now have a total of 1,200 acres of land in our possession, with an additional 612 acres handed over by the district administration. The project has received board approval, and we have completed 7-8% of all procurement and engineering activities. We are set to commence the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) phase. Some project costs have increased, and we plan to approach the board for approval. Additionally, discussions with IOCL and the ministry will take place as it is a joint venture project. We anticipate completing all approvals in the next two to three months, enabling us to proceed with awarding the EPC", he explained. Kumar also highlighted the potential benefits of the facility for southern districts, attracting polymer companies after the establishment of the petrochemical complex.
