Delhi Govt Aims to Boost EV Adoption

Delhi government has announced EV Policy 2.0 that offers subsidies up to Rs 36,000 for women purchasing electric two-wheelers. The policy aims to boost EV adoption by providing incentives for two and three-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and scrapping old ICE vehicles along with phasing out CNG auto rickshaws and fossil fuel vehicles to combat air pollution. The benefit is believed to be availed by the first 10,000 women, who are holding a driving license.
The proposal is said to be under the government's consideration and is expecting approval soon. To encourage female participation in the EV shift, the women in Delhi are expected to receive a purchase incentive of Rs 12,000 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), up to Rs 36,000 on electric two-wheelers.
Designed to encourage the Centre's PM E-DRIVE scheme, the EV Policy 2.0 is believed to accelerate electric vehicle adoption across Delhi. The scheme is said to remain valid until March 31, 2030, and outlines a series of incentives targeting not just electric two-wheelers but also three-wheelers and commercial vehicles.
Delhi is rapidly emerging as a leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India, driven by its ambitious EV policy aiming for 25 percent of new vehicle registrations to be electric by 2024.

The government has extended the policy until March 2025 and reintroduced subsidies to boost adoption. As of mid-2023, over 1.2 lakh EVs had been registered, with electric two-wheelers dominating. Infrastructure development includes over 2,500 charging points, with plans to expand significantly. Delhi also plans to electrify public transport by deploying over 8,000 electric buses by 2025. While the city has made notable progress, challenges remain in expanding charging infrastructure and ensuring sustainable energy sources.
