
Essar Chooses Final Technology Partner for UK Industrial Carbon Capture Site

Essar Oil UK has chosen Elessent Clean Technologies' BELCO gas cleaning technology as the primary licensor for the proposed EET Industrial Carbon Capture facility at Stanlow, UK. This marks a significant stride in Essar Oil UK's $1.2 billion initiative to lower the refinery's carbon footprint by curbing 95% (2 million tons) of CO2 emissions. This move aims to establish the refinery as the world's pioneering low-carbon refinery and the first producer of low-carbon fuel.
Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of Essar Oil UK, expressed satisfaction in finalizing the licensor technology provider, marking an advancement in their decarbonization strategy. With a substantial investment of $1.2 billion, Essar Oil UK aims to become the world's premier low-carbon refinery. Partnering with Elessent Clean Technologies for the BELCO scrubbing technology, the company plans to slash its refinery emissions by 95%, a crucial step in its sustainability journey.
This investment not only ensures the refinery's sustainable operation but also contributes significantly to the economic prosperity of North West England while playing a pivotal role in bolstering the UK's energy security. By onboarding all key technology partners, Essar Oil UK has progressed the development of basic engineering design packages (BEDP) for licensed technologies, a critical milestone in the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase of the project. Michael Cherry, Vice President of Refining Technologies at Elessent Clean Technologies, emphasized their collaborative efforts with Essar to deliver a reliable gas cleaning solution using the BELCO scrubbing technology, ensuring the delivery of clean and cool flue gas.
