Essar Picks Partner for UK Carbon Capture Facility
Essar Oil UK has chosen Denmark's Topsoe as a vital technology provider for integrating an industrial carbon capture facility into its Stanlow project in the UK, a move aimed at reshaping its energy operations. As per the company's announcement, Topsoe is set to deliver its eco-friendly flue-gas treatment technology known as SNOXTM. This decision signifies a substantial step forward in Essar Oil UK's USD 1.2 billion initiative to make its refinery more sustainable, with the objective of reducing around 2 million tons of CO2 emissions. The ultimate aim is to establish the world's leading low carbon refinery, specializing in environmentally friendly fuels. Earlier this year, Essar introduced Essar Energy Transition (EET), a new entity dedicated to propelling low carbon ventures in the UK and India over the coming five years. EET's investment focus will span the Stanlow site (situated between Liverpool and Manchester) and various projects in India, all geared toward fostering low carbon energy solutions.
Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of Essar Oil UK, emphasized that the company is advancing its decarbonization efforts with a significant investment of USD 1.2 billion. This substantial commitment aims to position their refinery as a pioneering global low carbon facility. The planned industrial carbon capture facility, along with the upcoming hydrogen fuel switching initiative, is expected to drastically reduce the refinery's CO2 emissions by an impressive 95 percent. Maheshwari highlighted the value of collaborating with Topsoe, endorsing their SNOX technology as a dependable and environmentally friendly solution for treating flue-gas.
The company's comprehensive decarbonization strategy focuses on two key projects. Firstly, the implementation of an industrial carbon capture (ICC) system at Stanlow, with a target to be operational by 2028. Secondly, transitioning from natural gas to hydrogen as the primary fuel source. These endeavors are projected to collectively cut annual emissions by approximately 1 million tons of CO2 each. The company emphasized that these strategic actions will position Essar Oil UK at the forefront of the UK's energy transition, enabling the production of the nation's first low carbon fuels. This initiative reinforces the refinery's crucial role in strengthening UK energy security and resilience.
