EU Designates iPadOS as 'Gatekeeper' under New Tech Rules

InThe European Commission has expanded its scrutiny of tech giants by designating Apple's iPadOS as a 'gatekeeper' under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This move comes after the Commission previously identified Apple as a gatekeeper for its iOS operating system, Safari browser, and App Store last September. Following a market investigation, the Commission determined that iPadOS serves as a crucial gateway for businesses to connect with end users, solidifying Apple's entrenched position in the market.

In response to the findings, the EU has given Apple six months to ensure full compliance with DMA obligations specific to iPadOS. The designation of iPadOS as a gatekeeper further underscores the Commission's efforts to promote fair competition and address concerns surrounding digital market dominance. Alongside Apple, other tech giants named as gatekeepers include Alphabet, Amazon, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft. These companies are required to adhere to all DMA obligations by March 7.

Thierry Breton, the Commissioner for Internal Market, emphasized the significance of this decision, stating, 'Today we conclude the first market investigation for qualitative designation under the DMA finding that also iPadOS is an important gateway for businesses to reach consumers'. The Commission's action reflects ongoing efforts to regulate the behavior of major tech players in the European market, aiming to foster innovation, protect consumers, and create a level playing field for all stakeholders involved.
