Foxconn, a key contract manufacturer for iPhone, is making significant strides in gender diversity in its Indian operations.

The Taiwanese electronics giant is actively encouraging women employees to take up leadership positions in design and other technology-related roles.

This move aligns with Foxconn's broader strategy to enhance gender inclusivity and empowerment within its workforce in India.

With a workforce of 48.000 employees across India, Foxconn has taken deliberate steps to ensure that women play a pivotal role in its operations. Currently, approximately 70 percent of Foxconn’s workforce in India comprises women. Notably, 25 percent of Foxconn’s new hires are married women.

In a significant development, Foxconn recently inaugurated a women only residential complex in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. This complex, built by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), can house over 18,000 women employees, working with Foxconn.

The company is currently setting up its second-largest mobile manufacturing plant outside China in Karnataka, with a planned investment of Rs 25,000 crore.

This new facility is expected to generate 40,000 jobs, contributing to India’s growing role as a global manufacturing hub. Recently, Foxconn infused additional Rs 1,200 crore into its Karnataka unit, bringing the total investment in Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Pvt Ltd to approximately Rs 13,800 crore.

Moreover, Foxconn is expanding its footprint in India by diversifying its operations. The company has formed a joint venture to establish a semiconductor plant in India, marking a significant step towards bolstering the country’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Additionally, Foxconn is in the process of starting electric vehicle (EV) production in India, further aligning with the country’s push towards sustainable and innovative technologies.

Foxconn Chairman Young Liu emphasizes that there is an upward trend in all types of hiring by the company in India, with a focus on merit rather than gender. This progressive approach underscores Foxconn’s vision of fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce that drives innovation and excellence across its global operations.
