Foxconn Expands Major Investments in Karnataka
Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and a key supplier to Apple, has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its operations in Karnataka, India, following a high-level strategic meeting with the state government. The meeting was attended by a delegation led by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and included key government officials and Foxconn’s Chairman and CEO, Young Liu. The discussions centered on Foxconn’s ongoing projects and future investment plans, which are poised to significantly boost the state’s economic growth, job creation, and technological innovation.
Foxconn, under its Hon Hai Technology Group, has been actively increasing its footprint in Karnataka, particularly through the establishment of a major mobile phone assembly plant, code-named 'Project Elephant'. This facility, which will be dedicated to assembling iPhones, is being constructed on a sprawling 300-acre site within the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) near Bengaluru’s international airport. The project represents a colossal investment of Rs 22,000 crore and is expected to generate more than 50,000 jobs upon completion. Construction of the plant is already in progress, with the Karnataka Department of Commerce and Industries ensuring that all necessary approvals and infrastructure, including power and water supplies, are expedited to meet the project timelines. The state's commitment to providing a seamless operational environment has been a key factor in Foxconn’s decision to enhance its investment in the region.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his enthusiasm for the deepening partnership between Foxconn and Karnataka, describing it as a relationship with immense potential for mutual growth and success. He emphasized the state’s competitive advantages, such as efficient logistics, a reliable power supply, a skilled workforce, and a robust vendor base, all of which support dynamic industries like Foxconn's. The Chief Minister assured Foxconn of the government’s full support, stating that the state is committed to facilitating all necessary approvals and infrastructure to ensure the success of Foxconn’s projects. He highlighted the significant employment opportunities that will be created through these initiatives, which will boost the local economy and empower the state’s workforce.
In addition to Project Elephant, Foxconn is also working on establishing a manufacturing and assembly facility for mechanical components used in electric vehicles (EVs), named 'Project Cheetah'. This project will further solidify Foxconn’s presence in Karnataka’s burgeoning technology sector. The company has already secured private land for this initiative within Bengaluru District, underscoring its long-term commitment to the state.
Foxconn’s CEO and Chairman, Young Liu, expressed his optimism about the company’s growing presence in Karnataka, praising the state’s conducive ecosystem for innovation, manufacturing, and technological growth. He noted that the strategic partnership with the Government of Karnataka is key to advancing Foxconn’s projects, including the mobile phone assembly plant and the EV components facility. Liu appreciated the state’s proactive approach in supporting infrastructure, approvals, and utilities, which he said would ensure the successful execution of the company’s plans. He added that Foxconn is looking forward to contributing to Karnataka’s economic development and creating thousands of new job opportunities for its people.
Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, MB Patil, echoed the Chief Minister’s sentiments, highlighting Karnataka’s leadership in technological innovation. He stated that Foxconn’s Project Elephant represents a significant investment in the future of Karnataka, with the initiative playing a critical role in the state’s continued growth as a global technology hub. Patil assured that comprehensive support is being provided by all key departments within the state. Foxconn is receiving full backing from the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Fire Services, and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), all of which are working together to ensure the smooth progress of the project. The government’s commitment to facilitating seamless coordination between these bodies is aimed at swiftly addressing any requirements and ensuring the project’s success.
