Global PC Market Reaches 62.5 Million Units Ahead of AI Boom
A report stated that global PC shipments increased 3.1 percent in the second quarter of 2024 and touched 62.5 million units, making this quarter the second consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth.
The industry has shifted to an AI-powered PC; the laptops, which come fitted with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X platform, have caused the first wave of AI laptop growth, according to Counterpoint Research. With the release time of AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Lunar Lake slated for the second half of Q3 2024, AI PC momentum is expected to begin then.
HP led the market in Q2 2024, with 21 percent share, followed by Dell with a 16 percent market share. Apple maintained 8.5 percent share, and the company kept relatively quiet during the quarter.
The expectation is that the AI PC Market will then grow significantly during H2 2024 as shipments of Windows on Arm AI devices will really get going towards the end of Q2 2024.
H2 2024 will be the battlefield for AI PCs. Vendors are paving the way for the proliferation of AI PCs and rise of a brand-new technology generation", said William Li, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.
According to Li, since AI PCs don't come cheap yet, enterprise and commercial demand is likely to be more complete than consumer demand in the early going. "In our view, enterprise will lead the mainstream consumer segment, although we won't necessarily witness a more aggressive adoption curve in the first year that AI PCs start shipping", he added.
The AI technology surge will change the PC market landscape as the industry waits for more breakthroughs.
