Gujarat to Host Asia's Largest Biogas Plant for Renewable Energy

GrunerGruner Renewable Energy, in collaboration with a prominent business conglomerate, is poised to inaugurate Asia's largest Compressed Biogas (CBG) facility in Navsari, Gujarat, a substantial milestone in India's pursuit of renewable energy. With an estimated investment of about Rs. 220 crores, this initiative aligns closely with governmental efforts to expand renewable energy adoption nationwide.

The flagship CBG plant in Navsari is designed to produce 44 tons of biogas per day (TPD) utilizing economical feedstocks such as paddy, pressmud, canetrash, and organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OF MSW). Annually, it is projected to generate over 16,000 tons of biogas, significantly contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goals of enhancing energy independence and sustainability.

Gujarat, known for its proactive stance in the green energy sector, has seen heightened interest from major Indian corporations investing in renewable energy projects. Since introducing the pioneering Hybrid Policy in 2018, the state has achieved an installed capacity of 1,373 MW in wind and solar energy sectors, underscoring its leadership in diversifying the renewable energy portfolio.

Utkarsh Gupta, Founder & CEO of Gruner Renewable Energy, emphasized the company's commitment to combating climate change and driving economic growth through sustainable energy solutions. "Since our inception in 2023, Gruner has been dedicated to mitigating climate risks by converting waste into biogas, promoting environmental sustainability. Plants like Navsari will play a crucial role in reducing India's reliance on fossil fuels, generating employment within the biofuel sector, and significantly reducing our crude oil import bill", Gupta affirmed.

The Navsari CBG plant is pivotal in India's comprehensive strategy for CBG-based rural economies, expected to create job opportunities for local stakeholders including farmers, suppliers, laborers, and youth.

Gruner Renewable Energy strategically selected Navsari for its high-yielding and cost-effective feedstocks—pressmud, paddy, OF MSW, and canetrash ensuring efficient biofuel production, optimizing the feedstock supply chain, and reducing pretreatment costs. By converting industrial waste into CBG, the plant will address waste management challenges and help mitigate environmental pollution.

During the inaugural India Energy Week (IEW), Prime Minister Modi outlined plans for over $67 billion investments in India's energy sector over the next five years, with intentions to establish 5,000 CBG plants nationwide as part of the renewable energy expansion strategy.

India's CBG potential, estimated at nearly 62 million metric tons (MMT) from various sources, underscores its capacity for bio manure generation, estimated at 370 MMT, as per Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.'s (IOCL) white paper on CBG.

Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell data reveals India's gas production at 29,769 million metric standard cubic meters (mmscm) against consumption of 55,256 mmscm, resulting in a shortfall of 25,488 mmscm met through imports. 'CBG has the potential to bridge this gap', Gupta noted, recognizing CBG's pivotal role in India's renewable energy sector growth under the new government.
