Honeywell and ENEOS Partner on Groundbreaking Hydrogen Carrier Project
Energy company ENEOS in Japan is set to develop the world's inaugural commercial-scale Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) project using Honeywell's innovative solution. This project aims to facilitate the long-distance transportation of clean hydrogen, addressing the growing demand across industries and making use of existing refining assets and infrastructure.
Honeywell's LOHC solution aligns with key megatrends, including automation, the future of aviation, and energy transition. By offering a cost-effective method for transporting hydrogen over long distances, the Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier becomes a crucial component in transitioning towards lower-carbon economies.
Ken West, President and CEO of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions, emphasized the significance of the LOHC solution in matching international supply and demand for hydrogen. This collaboration supports ENEOS in its journey towards a hydrogen-powered future.
The Honeywell LOHC solution involves chemically combining hydrogen gas into methylcyclohexane (MCH), a liquid carrier compatible with existing infrastructure. The hydrogen, in the form of MCH, will be exported to ENEOS in Japan, and upon reaching its destination, the hydrogen will be recovered using the Honeywell MCH Dehydrogenation process, ready for use. This collaboration signifies a step forward in addressing challenges associated with hydrogen transportation and underscores the pivotal role hydrogen is expected to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
This project is part of a series of hydrogen transportation initiatives between Honeywell and ENEOS, demonstrating a commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
