India And Guyana Seek To Strengthen Their Diplomatic Ties
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a speech to the Indian community here that India and Guyana are developing a cooperation suited for the modern era. Jaishankar, who is visiting Guyana for the first time, also informed the Indian community of his meetings with Guyanese officials and the two nations' shared determination to raise the level of their collaboration.
“Delighted to interact with the Indian community today evening in Guyana. Thank Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and Speaker Manzoor Nadir for joining us. Conveyed that we are forging a partnership that is fit for purpose for the contemporary era,” he tweeted after addressing the diaspora on Sunday. Earlier in the day, he met Guyanese service officers who had undergone training in India.
“Visited the evocative monument to Indian arrival in Berbice, Guyana. Shared my admiration of their endeavours and successes with the diaspora. Thank Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Charles Ramson Jr. for joining,” he said in another tweet.
Jaishankar visited Mahatma Gandhi's memorial and planted a tree in honour of India-Guyana friendship. He stated that Gandhiji's message of environmental concern was global and eternal.
Jaishankar also joined the diaspora for morning prayers at the Ram Krishna Dharmik Mandir here and praised Minister of Human Services Vindhya Vasini Persaud for his participation.
"I'm so happy to see how traditions, heritage, and customs are being preserved," he remarked. On Friday, Jaishankar co-chaired the 4th India-CARICOM ministerial meeting in Georgetown with his Jamaican colleague Kaminaj Smith.
On Thursday, he met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York before departing on Friday for a nine-day tour to Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, his first visit to these Latin American and Caribbean countries as external affairs minister.
