In In a recent statement, the Biden administration highlighted India's crucial role as its most significant partner in South Asia. Afreen Akhter, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, discussed various initiatives aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship. One notable initiative is the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), launched last year, focusing on building a resilient semiconductor supply chain, enhancing space cooperation, and partnering on next-generation telecommunications.

The US is actively collaborating with India on infrastructure and climate-related projects. Under the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, both countries are working on deploying multi-billion-dollar climate infrastructure, including a new fund with a USD 500 million investment contribution from the US Development Finance Corporation. The initiatives encompass diverse projects, such as the introduction of 40,000 public electric buses through an innovative payment security mechanism.

Moreover, the US and India are deepening their defence partnership through joint exercises, strengthened defence industrial cooperation, and the annual 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue. The focus on defence is a key aspect of the Indo-Pacific strategy.

Highlighting the broader regional engagement, the US is making significant investments in South Asia. Notably, a half-billion-dollar investment in the Port of Colombo in Sri Lanka, announced last fall, aims to expand the port's capacity and enhance Sri Lanka's economic role in the region.

Additionally, the US is actively engaged in bolstering regional security. Recent initiatives include providing patrol boats to the Maldives for monitoring Exclusive Economic Zones and delivering Coast Guard cutters to Sri Lanka.

The comprehensive engagement underscores the multifaceted relationship between the US and India, emphasizing collaboration on critical technologies, climate initiatives, and regional security for mutual benefit.
