India Marks First National Space Day with Chandrayaan-3's Historic Achievement
India is celebrating its first-ever National Space Day on August 23, 2024, honoring the landmark success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. On this day in 2023, ISRO's Vikram Lander made a historic soft landing on the moon, making India the fourth nation to achieve this feat and the first to land near the moon’s southern pole. The event also saw the successful deployment of the Pragyan Rover, with the landing site being named 'Shiv Shakti' point.
This year’s National Space Day theme, "Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India's Space Saga", reflects on the profound impact of India's achievements in space exploration. The festivities, taking place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, are being broadcast live on ISRO’s website and YouTube channel, allowing a global audience to join in the celebrations.
ISRO Chairman S Somanath lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his significant role in advancing India's space endeavors. In an interview with ANI, Somanath highlighted Modi’s essential contributions to space policy reforms. "PM Modi's leadership has been instrumental in shaping key policies for India’s space sector. His vision has facilitated the creation and implementation of these policies", Somanath remarked.
The two-day celebration at Bharat Mandapam includes a variety of high-profile sessions, interactive exhibits, and important announcements about India’s space achievements. Additionally, mobile exhibitions known as 'Space on Wheels' will tour universities and colleges across the nation, aiming to educate students about ISRO’s work and India’s space missions.
The day will also feature a quiz for students with questions like, 'Which star is closest to Earth?' This activity highlights India's commitment to sparking interest in space science among young people.
National Space Day not only commemorates India’s historic lunar landing but also represents the country's ongoing dedication to space exploration and technological advancement. The events and educational initiatives planned for this day underscore India’s role in pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and utilizing space technology for societal progress.
