India to Establish Centre of Excellence in Quantum and 6G Technologies
India is set to strengthen its position in quantum and 6G technologies with the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Karnataka. The initiative is a collaboration between the Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE) India and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), under the 100-day programme of the Ministry of Communications.
The CoE, headquartered at VTU's Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF) in Bangalore, will focus on advancing research and development in quantum technology and related areas. Designed on a hub-and-spoke model, the centre will leverage the expertise and infrastructure of VTU’s 228 affiliated colleges, fostering collaboration and scaling innovations in quantum and 5G/6G technologies.
The CoE aims to create vertical-focused innovation groups, bringing together experts from affiliated institutions to drive cutting-edge research. It will also strengthen collaboration with key organisations such as the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), Bharat 6G Alliance, and TSDSI, along with academic networks and the startup ecosystem.
With access to over 400,000 students, 2,000 PhDs, and numerous researchers across VTU’s network, the CoE will play a pivotal role in streamlining research and driving the commercialisation of new technologies.
Ajai Chowdhury, Chairman of the Mission Governing Board for the National Quantum Mission, noted that there are around 600 scientists and 50 startups working in the field of quantum technology in India. Launched in April 2023, the National Quantum Mission aims to enhance India’s capabilities in quantum science and technology, with significant progress already being made.
The CoE is expected to accelerate India’s leadership in the global quantum and 6G sectors, positioning the country as a key player in these emerging technologies.
