Indian Railways Earns INR 54,733Cr in Revenue, Records 73% Increase
From April 2022 to January 2023, Indian Railway earned a record Rs 54,733 crore in the passenger segment. This represents a 73 percent increase over the previous year. During the same period in 2022, the Railways earned Rs 31,634 crore.
In the post-COVID-19 period, railway passenger traffic has also increased significantly. Passenger traffic was 809 crore in the pre-COVID-19 period (2019-20), but fell to 125 crore in FY 2020-21. Railway passenger traffic recovered to 351.9 crore in fiscal year 2021-22.
“Enhanced mobility across the country and demand for faster and competitive trains will assist the growth in passenger traffic in the coming years,” the Economic Survey 2022-23 report said.
According to the national transporter, the reserved passenger segment has increased by 7%. During the period, 6,590 lakh passengers booked trains, compared to 6,181 lakhs last year.
During the period from April 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023, the reserved passenger segment generated Rs 42,945 crore. It generated Rs 29,079 crore in revenue during the same period last year, a 48 percent increase.
