Justice Sanjiv Khanna Appointed as 51st Chief Justice of India
India's present Supreme Court Justice Sanjiv Khanna shall be the upcoming Chief Justice of India. He will replace the outgoing Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud, whose tenure will end on November 10, 2024. Sanjiv Khanna will assume charge as the Chief Justice of India on November 11, 2024.
The appointment was confirmed by the Union government after CJI Chandrachud recommended the same last week. Law Minister of the Centre Arun Ram Meghwal announced the decision on social media platform X stating Hon'ble President of India had approved the appointment after due consultation with the current Chief Justice, as required by the Constitution.
Justice Khanna, who would then be the second-most senior after Chief Justice of India Kalyan Joshi, would become the 51st CJI. He was born on 14 May 1960. His career in law started in 1983 and began, in fact, in practice within district courts at the Tis Hazari complex, before shifting to Delhi High Court. His appointment as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court came in the year 2005, and he became a permanent judge the next year.
Elevation by Justice Khanna to the Supreme Court was witnessed in January 2019. As a Supreme Court judge, he has earned recognition for his expertise in constitutional law and also balanced handling of major legal matters. The elevation of Justice Khanna marks an important milepost in the Indian judiciary, which is on the threshold of seeing him take over as CJI at the country's most critical juncture in the legal world.
