K Sanjay Murthy Appointed New Comptroller and Auditor General of India
The Government of India has named K Sanjay Murthy as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. An IAS officer from the 1989 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Murthy is currently serving as the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education.
In his current role as Secretary, Murthy has been instrumental in overseeing policies related to higher education, ensuring the effective implementation of government initiatives, and working closely with educational institutions to foster development in the sector.
Murthy's appointment as the CAG comes after the tenure of Girish Chandra Murmu, who held the position since August 2020. Murmu, before his appointment as CAG, was the first Lieutenant-Governor of the newly formed Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Murthy’s vast experience in administration and governance positions him well to take on the responsibilities of auditing the accounts of the Government of India and promoting transparency in public finances.
With his experience in managing educational policy and a long-standing bureaucratic career, Murthy is expected to provide strong leadership as the CAG, with a focus on ensuring fiscal accountability and strengthening the role of the CAG’s office in protecting public funds.
