Microsoft Launches New Unified App for Windows Across Platforms

Separator

MicroMicrosoft has unveiled a new Windows app designed to provide seamless access to Windows from multiple platforms, including macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, web browsers, and Windows PCs. The app acts as a central hub, enabling users to stream Windows experiences from various sources such as Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Remote Desktop.

“The Windows app offers a unified experience, making it easy for users to connect to the Windows platform they are familiar with from any device", said Microsoft. Key features include customizable home screens, multi-monitor support, USB redirection, and robust security features such as multifactor authentication to ensure a secure and efficient connection from anywhere.

The app is currently targeted at users with Microsoft work and school accounts, primarily transitioning existing Remote Desktop clients to the new platform. While Microsoft’s legacy Remote Desktop Connection app remains part of Windows 11, the new app aims to enhance productivity with improved functionality and compatibility across devices.

At present, the app does not support consumer accounts. However, Microsoft's long-term plan is to transition Windows entirely to the cloud, offering AI-powered services and enhanced digital roaming, as reported by 'The Verge' last year.

The Windows app is now available for download via the Microsoft Store and Apple’s App Store for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, with an Android version in public preview.

Microsoft’s new app represents a significant step toward a future where cloud-based Windows experiences can be accessed effortlessly across devices and platforms.
